Spring Break

Spring Break

Today marked the first day of spring break for Fiona and me. We’re not going anywhere, other than the library, but I’m hoping to get tons of writing done in the coming days. I told Fiona she could come to the library with me as long as she was quiet and let me work. She wanted to get some books and maybe start on her Young Author’s story. We started by hitting up the Starbucks across from the library.  Hot chocolate for her, and large (venti?) vanilla latte for me. Writing fuel.

She read one of Dan Gutman’s Weird School books in her First Grade Book Club, so she wanted to continue in that series. Fortunately, there are about twenty of them to choose from. I’m curious about how long they take to write. There isn’t much to them, but then again, they’re meant for first and second graders. At any rate, she found a bunch of them, and we migrated to a table in the quiet section of the library.

She was a great little trooper, and she occupied herself with reading, interrupting only occasionally to point out a funny passage. I was able to make some writing progress, which is always good. She ended up reading one of the books start to finish, and then she began drawing in her journal:

She's a big fan of drawing like Mo Willems right now.

After a while, we packed up and went to the Pickwick movie theater, where Callie joined us to see Mr. Peabody and Sherman. It wasn’t bad, as far as kids’ movies go. It was about a time traveling genius dog who adopted a boy. The only questionable part was a fairly unnecessary joke about “boobies.” I don’t think they understood the joke, but you never know. It was a pretty fun day.

I could have written for a few more hours, I bet, as I was on a roll. But kids, you know? It’s like they want you to pay attention to them or something.
